Latest Odds to Be the Next Pope
With Pope Francis’ successor yet to be named, betting markets are heating up. Here are the current frontrunners in the race to become the next pontiff, according to William Hill:
- Pietro Parolin – 9/4
Currently the Secretary of State of the Vatican, Parolin is the favourite to succeed Pope Francis. Known for his diplomatic skills and close ties to the late Pope, many see him as a natural continuation of Francis’ legacy. - Luis Antonio Tagle – 3/1
If elected, Tagle would become the first Asian Pope in history. The former Archbishop of Manila, now serving in a senior Vatican role, has widespread support and is viewed as a progressive, global figure. - Matteo Zuppi – 6/1
A leading Italian cardinal, Zuppi is known for his pastoral approach and alignment with many of Pope Francis’ values. His odds have been shortening amid growing support. - Peter Turkson – 6/1
The Ghanaian cardinal is another strong candidate. Turkson has long been seen as a possible papal contender and would also make history as the first African Pope in over 1,500 years. - Robert Sarah – 8/1
Often considered a more conservative choice, Sarah represents a different theological direction. His candidacy appeals to those within the Church looking for a return to more traditional values. - Pierbattista Pizzaballa – 8/1
Currently the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem, Pizzaballa is a wildcard but respected within ecclesiastical circles, particularly for his work in the Middle East. - Peter Erdo – 10/1
The Hungarian cardinal has a reputation for being both scholarly and orthodox. He is quietly building momentum as an outside chance. - Others – 16/1 and above
There are many other names in the frame, and as the conclave nears, don’t be surprised if a surprise candidate rises in the betting.
How the Next Pope is Chosen
The papal conclave will take place in the Sistine Chapel, behind closed doors. Only cardinals under the age of 80 are eligible to vote, and no technology or external communication is allowed. Votes are cast in secret, and a two-thirds majority is required for a new Pope to be elected.
The outcome is signaled to the world by the colour of the smoke rising from the chapel’s chimney: black for no decision, white for the announcement of a new Pope.
