Emery Furious as Villa Miss Out on Champions League
Aston Villa have lodged an official complaint against the PGMOL following their controversial 2-0 defeat to Manchester United on the final day of the Premier League season. The result that saw Villa narrowly miss Champions League qualification and left manager Unai Emery furious.

Villa File Complaint Over Referee Appointment for Crucial Clash
The Midlands club issued a formal protest regarding the appointment of referee Thomas Bramall, questioning why such an inexperienced official was selected for a high-stakes fixture with European qualification on the line. Bramall, who has overseen just 11 Premier League matches this season, was the second least experienced referee on duty across the league on the final day.
Aston Villa stated, “The club believes a more seasoned referee should have been appointed given the significance of the match.”
Controversial Decision Costs Villa Crucial Goal at Old Trafford
Villa’s frustrations stem from a pivotal moment in the second half. After playing with ten men due to Emi Martinez’s first-half dismissal, Morgan Rogers thought he had put Villa ahead when he dispossessed United goalkeeper Altay Bayindir and slotted into an empty net.
However, referee Bramall blew for a foul, ruling that Bayindir had control of the ball. Replays suggested otherwise — Bayindir did not appear to have both hands on the ball when Rogers poked it free. Because the whistle was blown before the ball crossed the line, VAR could not intervene to review the incident.
Three minutes later, Manchester United took the lead through Amad Diallo before Christian Eriksen’s late penalty sealed the 2-0 result.

Champions League Dream Dashed by Goal Difference
The defeat left Aston Villa in sixth place — just outside the top five needed for Champions League qualification. Had they secured a draw, they would have leapfrogged Newcastle United, who lost 1-0 to Everton.
Villa’s statement emphasized the disallowed goal’s impact, noting: “That moment was a major contributing factor to the club not qualifying for the Champions League.”

Villa Criticize VAR Inconsistencies and Refereeing Standards
Aston Villa’s complaint highlights broader concerns about Premier League officiating standards, especially for high-stakes matches. The club took aim at the decision to blow the whistle early — preventing VAR from doing its job — calling it “inconsistent with current refereeing guidelines.”
“VAR exists to ensure these types of situations receive proper scrutiny,” Villa’s statement continued. “Unfortunately, VAR technology was not allowed to serve its purpose.”
Director of Football Questions Referee Selection Criteria
Speaking after the match, Villa’s director of football operations, Damian Vidagany, made clear that the complaint was not about the disallowed goal itself — but about the PGMOL’s process.
“The referee admitted it was a mistake,” Vidagany said. “But why wasn’t a more experienced official assigned to one of the season’s most decisive fixtures, especially when it impacts four or five clubs?”
Emery Furious But Focuses on Villa’s Progress
Villa head coach Unai Emery acknowledged the decision was a “big mistake” but chose not to dwell on VAR’s failure. Speaking to TNT Sports, he said:
“The TV images are clear, but we must accept it. We spoke with the referee and he knows it was an error. We don’t want to focus on VAR — we want to focus on our season.”
Despite the heartbreak, Emery praised his team’s effort and emphasized their achievement in securing Europa League football.
“Our target was to qualify for Europe, and we are proud of what we’ve accomplished. We were very close to the Champions League.”
What’s Next for Aston Villa After Champions League Setback?
Although they missed out on Europe’s top competition, Villa’s sixth-place finish means they will compete in the Europa League next season — a major step forward under Emery’s leadership. The club’s firm stance on officiating suggests they’ll continue to push for systemic improvements as they prepare for another European campaign.
