Field Of Gold 2000 Guineas Glory Awaits
John Gosden’s pursuit of a complete British Classic set could reach a thrilling conclusion this Saturday at Newmarket, as his Craven Stakes hero Field Of Gold lines up as the leading contender in the 2000 Guineas. After decades of elite training success and over 3,000 career wins, Gosden, now working in tandem with his son Thady, has his sights firmly set on the one top-level race that has eluded him.

The Final Piece of the Puzzle for Gosden
John Gosden, who began training in the Newmarket area back in 1989, has claimed victories in the Derby, Oaks, St Leger, and 1000 Guineas. However, the 2000 Guineas has remained just out of reach. Field Of Gold, the current ante-post favourite, offers perhaps the trainer’s best shot yet at completing the set.
Despite the buzz surrounding the colt’s potential, Gosden remains composed:
“It’s nice to have a horse who at the moment is favourite, but it doesn’t mean that you’re going to win it,” he said, brushing off any external pressure.

A High-Class Line-Up of Rivals
The 2025 renewal of the 2000 Guineas features 11 high-calibre runners, making for a fiercely competitive race. Chief among Field Of Gold’s challengers is Charlie Appleby’s Ruling Court, who impressed with a dominant six-length win in Dubai. Appleby also sends Shadow Of Light, last season’s Middle Park and Dewhurst winner, with Mickael Barzalona aboard, while William Buick partners Ruling Court.
Saeed bin Suroor adds depth to the Godolphin team with Tornado Alert, while Aidan O’Brien, already a ten-time winner of this race, relies solely on Expanded, who was runner-up in the Dewhurst.
Other notable entries include:
- Green Impact (Jessica Harrington)
- Scorthy Champ (Joseph O’Brien)
- Wimbledon Hawkeye, second in the Craven Stakes
- Benevento, who finished fourth in the same trial
- Ya Mo Be There, a strong-finishing outsider
- Seagulls Eleven, a fan favourite owned by a syndicate of current and former Brighton & Hove Albion footballers
